On May 7, 2025, India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, where 26 civilians, including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali tourist, lost their lives in Jammu and Kashmir. It started as a coordinated tri-services military operation targeting nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. This decisive action was in direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

What is Operation Sindoor

Operation Sindoor is a military operation launched by India on May 7, 2025, targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). It marks one of the most significant cross-border strikes in recent history, carried out by India's tri-services — the Army, Air Force, and Navy — in response to a major terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir.

Why is it named Operation Sindoor

Women wear sindoor, which is primarily a symbol of marriage in Indian culture. Sindoor is traditionally applied in the parting of a woman's hair after marriage, signifying that a woman is married and her husband is alive. The name Operation Sindoor, chosen by the Indian government, indicated their will to get revenge for the widowed ladies. During the April 22 terrorist attack, many women lost their husbands, who were targeted because they were Hindu.

Why Was Operation Sindoor Launched?

The operation was triggered by the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, in which 26 civilians (including 25 Indians and 1 Nepali tourist) were killed. The Indian government attributed the attack to terrorist groups Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, which are believed to operate from bases inside Pakistan.

The attack, organized by Pakistan-based terror groups Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), was seen not only as a tragic loss of innocent lives but also as a blatant act of cross-border terrorism. In retaliation, the Indian government authorized precision airstrikes targeting nine key terror camps and launch pads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), including areas like Bahawalpur, Muzaffarabad, and Muridke.

These camps were being used for training militants, planning attacks, and facilitating infiltration into Indian territory. The operation was also a strategic move to reinforce India's deterrence posture, demonstrating that future acts of terrorism would be met with decisive military action. Operation Sindoor aimed to destroy terror infrastructure and preempt future threats, ensuring the safety of Indian citizens and national security.

India’s Successful Strike on Pakistan

India’s successful strike on Pakistan under Operation Sindoor in May 2025 marked a significant moment in the country's counter-terrorism and military strategy. The operation was launched in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack, where Pakistan-based terrorists killed 26 Hindu pilgrims.

In a precision airstrike lasting 23 minutes, India targeted and destroyed nine terror camps located in Pakistan and POK, including in Bahawalpur, Muzaffarabad, Kotli, and Muridke key strongholds of terror outfits like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The operation resulted in the elimination of high-value targets, most notably Abdul Rauf Azhar, a senior JeM commander and UN-designated terrorist. India used Rafale fighter jets, SCALP cruise missiles, and satellite-based coordination for the strikes, showcasing its advanced military capabilities. Crucially, India also activated its S-400 air defense system to intercept attempted retaliatory drone and missile strikes from Pakistan.

India effectively avoided escalation by precisely targeting terrorist infrastructure rather than civilian or military assets of the Pakistani government, and the world community mostly saw the operation as a calm and reasonable reaction to terrorism. Now regarded as one of India's most effective cross-border counter-terrorist operations, Operation Sindoor supports its zero-tolerance stance on terrorism and enhances its strategic deterrence.

India's precision strike weapons

India's precision strike weapons played a crucial role in the success of Operation Sindoor and other terrorism and military operations. These advanced weapons ensure India can conduct targeted strikes with minimal collateral damage while achieving high-value objectives. Some of the key precision strike weapons used by India:

  • Rafale Fighter Jets: Multi-role capabilities, including precision bombing, reconnaissance, and close air support.

  • SCALP Cruise Missiles: Low radar signature and deep strike capabilities, ensuring minimal chance of interception. It was used in Operation Sindoor to destroy terror camps and infrastructure deep within enemy territory, including in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

  • BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile: The BrahMos missile reaches Mach 2.8. Launched from land, air, sea, and submarine platforms, it is well-known for its terrible force and superb precision.

  • S-400 Air Defense System: During Operation Sindoor, the S-400 played a key role in intercepting retaliatory strikes by Pakistan, providing India with a robust defense against potential escalation.

  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs): India uses advanced UAVs, such as the Heron and Searcher drones, for surveillance, intelligence gathering, and targeted strikes.

On the 9th of May, India responded to Pakistani armed drone strikes at 26 sites in J&K, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Along both the international boundary (IB) and the LoC, drones were spotted over a broad arc of sites stretching from Baramulla and Srinagar in the north to Bhuj in the west.

Women Officers in Operation Sindoor

It also highlighted the growing role of women in India’s defense forces, with officers like Colonel Sofia Quraishi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh playing crucial roles in communication and aerial support. Their involvement reflects the strength, diversity, and modern capability of India’s armed forces, reinforcing the message that national security is a collective responsibility carried out with courage, professionalism, and resolve.
